Purgatory – How bad do you want heaven?

When you want heaven as bad as you want to breathe then you shall enter.

One of the most common mistakes made by a Christian is to think that if you believe Jesus died for your sins and you accept him as your personal Lord and Savior that you are saved. OHHHHHHHH how I wish it were that easy!

Accepting and recognizing Jesus as our personal Lord and savior is the first step for the Catholic Church, but not the end. It is like someone who never really took the health of his body serious, but one night saw an Insanity infomercial and realized he needed to get in shape. But does this realization automatically transform his potbelly into a ripped 6 pack? Ah… no, now comes the hard part, actually doing it! – Same in the Catholic Spiritual life.

What does it take to get into heaven? Nothing other than being perfected in LOVE, becoming a new creation, a new person in Christ. Rev 21:27 says, “Nothing unclean shall enter it (heaven), nor any one who practices falsehood…:

Jesus says in Matthew 7:21-23, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

And what is the will of the Father? “A new command I give you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciple by your love (John 13:34-35).

Love is the key, and not just love, but love in the likeness of God’s love or ETERNAL LOVE, “even as I (God) have loved you.” That’s how you are a disciple and only those that are made clean (Revelation 12:17) through ETERNAL LOVE enter heaven.

And love takes hard work! Anything good takes much hard work and sacrifice. Think of how hard people work for just earthly success. One of my favorite motivational videos is this:

This guy works so hard for worldly success and riches, which is admirable but in 50-100 years all that has been gained will be lost. How hard should we work to be perfected in love to gain our eternal crown!

There will be many who call themselves Christians, yet do not have ETERNAL LOVE dwelling in them and they will not be welcome into heaven. However, there are those who strive for Love like Christ’s love, yet it is still imperfect, lacking in some way. Purgatory is for these; those who have ETERNAL LOVE dwelling in them but it is still weak and not fully developed in some aspect. God in his MERCY has allowed purgatory. There would be very very few who would make it to heaven if God did not allow this great mercy.

But never aim for purgatory. Aim for heaven and if you fall a little short you still have God’s mercy! And if you were wondering what Eternal Love looks like, here it is:

Mary and Jesus both are perfected in eternal love, this is your goal, this is your motivation!

“It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God (Acts 14:22).”
